Best Beaches for Families in Margaret River

If you’re planning a family holiday down south, Margaret River’s coastline delivers some of the most beautiful, family-friendly beaches in Western Australia. Whether you’re after calm, kid-safe waters, a good coffee, or a secret bay to explore, there’s something here for everyone. Here are six of the best beaches for families in Margaret River — tried, tested, and totally worth the trip.

1. Georgette Street Beach

This one’s an absolute gem for kids. Georgette Street Beach is a little slice of paradise — protected by a reef, the water stays calm and crystal clear, perfect for kids to paddle or float about safely. It’s also dog-friendly, so the whole family (pups included!) can enjoy the day together. The only catch? It’s a bit of a trek over the boardwalk if you’re carrying lots of gear or wrangling toddlers. But once your toes hit the sand, you’ll forget all about it.

2. Gnarabup Beach

You can’t talk about the best beaches for families without mentioning Gnarabup. It’s a local favourite and always buzzing with happy families. Grab a coffee for yourself and a smoothie for the kids from The White Elephant Café, then wander down to the water. The water is usually calm, there’s a boat ramp if you’re heading out, and in summer, a floating pontoon pops up — a total hit with kids (and big kids). Just note, this one’s not dog-friendly.

3. The Secret Spot (just south of Gnarabup)

Tucked just south of Gnarabup, this hidden gem is where my daughter actually learnt to walk — so it’s extra special to me. On a good day, the water here is stunningly clear and calm, though it can sometimes collect a bit of seaweed depending on the time of year. It’s dog friendly, so your furry friends can enjoy it too. The walk back up to the car park is a bit of a workout, but the views from the lookout — and the chance to spot whales breaching offshore — make it worth every step.

4. Gracetown Beach

A 20-minute drive from town, Gracetown is perfect if you’ve got a car full of beach gear — you can park right beside the sand. The bay is sheltered and great for swimming or bodyboarding, with surfers often out the back. It’s not dog friendly, but just past the bridge, you’ll find another small stretch of sand where dogs are welcome. Before you head home, stop in at Gracies General Store for an icy pole or a sweet treat — it’s practically tradition.

5. The Rivermouth

If you’ve got toddlers or little ones still finding their beach feet, Rivermouth is ideal. Where the river meets the ocean, the water stays calm with no waves, making it a safe and easy swimming spot. It’s great for a relaxed family day out, so set up your cabana for some sandcastle building and paddle play on repeat. This one’s not dog friendly, but it’s perfect for a stress-free day by the water. This is one of the only surf lifesaver patrolled beaches in summer as well. Public toilets are also close by for when nature calls or a quick rinse off before jumping back in the car.

6. The Rockpool

For kids who love exploring, The Rockpool is an absolute winner. At low tide, it transforms into a natural playground of rock pools, crabs, shells, and sea creatures. And if you visit at high tide, you might be lucky enough to see a reverse waterfall — when waves surge through the rocks and spill back in a magical splash. Best of all, it’s dog friendly, so your pup can explore too.

Margaret River has no shortage of stunning spots, but these six really are the best beaches for families — from reef-protected bays to adventurous rock pools and coffee-with-a-view mornings.
